 Description
An incomplete gold finger ring dating the 13th century AD.

Description: The band is very thin and a very shallow D-shape in section. The outer surface is incised with a motif of diagonal lines and circles on the shoulder area of the ring, covering approximately a third of the length of the outer band's surface. The rest of the band is undecorated. The bezel is small and square with evidence of soldering obscuring detail suggesting a now missing separate bezel or possible a collet of some form. Despite missing its bezel the ring is only slightly distorted and mostly remains in a slightly worn but good condition;

Discussion: The overall form of this finger ring is relatively simple although the bezel form is unusual and may have involved a cup that slid over the band onto the bezel. The decoration on the band however is well represented on a number of medieval rings dating to the c.13th-14th century, including a similarly small banded example reported as treasure: 2017T93 (ESS-F5FC15).

 Description

A Post-Medieval gold iinscribed finger-ring, of 'Posy' type..

Description: The ring is formed from a thin hoop, with a convex outer face. The innermost face is engraved with a saying, motto or message in lower case does read 'God above increase our love'. There is also a makers mark of 'DF' in blackletter stamped on the inner band after the motto. The outside of the hoop is undeccorated. The hoop is now roughly ovoid due to post-depositional damage.

Discussion: The use of lower case lettering and its thin band suggests a c.18th century date as KENT-9CDF6B. This coupled with a maker's mark not known or listed anywhere, it is not therefore possible to assign a date prior to 1718. Thus the ring does not qualify as treasure as it cannot be comfortable dated to before 1718.

Inscription: God above increase our love
