 Description

A medieval copper-alloy harness pendant with suspension mount attached. The harness pendant is incomplete, but probably would have been circular in plan. It is set with an oval blue glass stone at the centre, and has a border of radial ribbing. The mount has a single rivet for attachment to the harness, and its suspension fork is formed by folding a slotted lug backwards around the axis bar. The metal surfaces of both pendant and mount retain traces of a gilt finish. No parallels for this object have yet been found.

Find of note status : This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.

 Description

An incomplete copper-alloy Medieval harness pendant. It consists of an open sexfoil frame with a concave outer face and flat reverse. The outer face is decorated with a raised projection between each of the lobes. An attachment lug, narrowed and pierced with a small circular hole at one end, extends from one side, sitting at a right-angle to the plane of the frame The inside of this lug forms a short, narrow slot, which was presumably designed to secure a missing separate pendant (as can be seen on similar examples recorded with the PAS, such as LVPL-52542B from Nottinghamshire)

Heraldic harness pendants, which this probably was originally (as per LVPL-52542B), were most popular during the 13th and early 14th centuries (Griffiths 1986).

 Description

A Medeival cast copper alloy enamelled heraldic harness fitting / harness hook of medieval date (1250-1400 AD). The fitting is complete and cast in one piece; it is irregular in plan and cross section having an upper shield (or heater) shaped plate which is rectangular in cross section. This plate expands on its lower edge into a square sectioned skirt, below this a sub-hexagonal (faceted rectangle) sectioned cast and wrought hook extends. The hook retains much of its original shape. The plate section of the hook is decorated on both faces with inlaid red enamel. The design created is three lined shields which are surrounded by the remains or a red coloured enamel. The reverse is of four fleur de lis, with a few specs remaining of red enamel within those.

An almost complete military 'Box Spur' of the post medieval period. It has a long, arching swan neck, punched with a serial number (2255) on the underside, and a slotted rowel box retaining a circular toothed rowel on iron pin. The arms are D-section in profile and have single loop terminals, one being incomplete. The inside heel of the spur displays the remains of a separate iron prong, which was utilised for fixing the spur directly into a ready made recess in the boot heel known as a 'box'. The terminals were also connected directly onto the sides of the boot heel by a pin or screw, eliminating the use of straps overall. Spurs of this type were worn by officers in Cavalry and other mounted units dating from the 19th century. The recorder notes that the spur was found, in context, with other British and European military artefacts.
