 Description

A cast copper alloy handle attachment lug from a chafing dish of Late Medieval or Post Medieval date (AD 1400-1600 AD). The lug is sub-oval in plan and sub-rectangular in section with a flared collar at one end beyond which is the stub of a circular rivet which would have attached to the vessel wall. The oval faces have a hole drilled through them to hold the handle. It is 24mm long, 15mm wide,9mm thick and weighs 12.95 grams. Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table. This particular handle is from a type B1 or D1 chafing-dish. These types of dish date to the 15th or 16th century (Lewis, J.M. 1973 'Some types of metal chafing-dish' Antiquaries Journal, Volume 53 pp. 60-70 Society of Antiquaries.)
