 Description

An incomplete buckle plate/sword hanger hybrid of post-medieval date, c.1550-1650. Description: The plate is un-recessed with tapering sides and trilobate end. The plate has two rivet holes which would have been paired on the front plate (remaining) and the backplate (missing). The terminal end rivet hole has the remains of a heavily corroded rivet in situ. One end of the trilobate terminal expands into an attachment loop with a large hole. Apart from the break of the strap loop and the corroded iron rivets, the buckle frame is in good condition with a polished deep green patina..

Discussion: This unusual type has been found attached to buckles dating c.1550-1650. Read (1988. 113, no.713) and (2001 43, no.373) illustrates simiilar cast and forged decorated buckle plates with a large integral side loop on page 113, no.713, which is dated from the 16th to 17th centuries. A small number of examples have also been reported to the PAS e.g. CORN-26820D and SUSS-C9A2E0.

 Description

An incomplete copper-alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of Post-Medieval date. It is missing the pin. It is D-shaped in section. One loop is rectangular and the other is D-shaped. They are separated by an integrally cast triangular bar. The outer edge is expanded with trefoil decoration defined by longitudinal grooves. The other edge is straight and segmented by five longitudinal grooves. The back of the frame is flat. There is a similar example recorded on the PAS database (NMS-9A9FA6).

A complete cast copper-alloy Post medieval Sword Belt Hanger Buckle. The plain double loop oval frame is pointed on the outer edges. On the bottom is an integral circular suspension loop, which is turned ninety degrees to the buckle. The height is 36mm, the width is 30mm and the weight is 4.59g.
