 Description

A complete but worn and abraded flat lead non-heraldic personal seal matrix of Medieval date c.AD 1200-1350. Description: The matrix is flat and circular in plan and with an incomplete suspension loop at the top of the reverse side. The front has an incised design featuring a large central octofoil (eight pettled flower) surrounded by a retrograde (backwards inscription) which would have appeared the right way round when used. It reads '+S':R[O]BERTI:FL':HVGON', this translates as 'Seal of Robert son of Hugo'. The reverse of the matrix is decorated by a fleur-de-lis in relief that cover the entirety of the reverse with a small hole forming the bottom of the upright element of the lis penetrating though at 45 degrees to the edge of the seal. The matrix is heavily patinated an off white colour typical of patinated lead. Discussion: This matrix fits with a group of commonly reported simple lead personal seal matrices dating to the 13th - mid 14th, such as KENT-279310. This group, with relatively simple non-heraldic designs and crude personal inscriptions belong to the 13th- early 14th centuries (Harvey and McGuinness 1996. 79-80).

Class: Non-Heraldic Personal
Inscription: +S':R[O]BERTI:FL':HVGON
