A plain oval tobacco-jar handle. Although usually identified thus - and some were certainly were used in this way - a number have been found with fragments of tin-plate/sheet-steel attached. This is inconsistent with use on a tobacco jar, as they were invariably of lead. It seems likely, therefore, that the handles were produced as stock items, which were fitted to the lids of a number of different types of domestic vessel.
